The ESG data conundrum for asset managers
- Technology
- Regulation
- Sourcing and procurement
Recent years have seen a few greenwashing scandals within the financial sector – the raid of Deutsche Bank subsidiary DWS in 2002 might come immediately to mind. As a result, regulators are now keeping a watchful eye over ESG claims. Most asset managers have every intention to comply, but that’s easier said than done when regulatory requirements are subject to interpretation and ESG data faces both coverage and quality issues.
ESG data can be based on estimates instead of actual measurements, contain outdated reporting, and compiled using methodology that oversimplify complex issues and lack transparency. Different financial products have very different requirements from data, which requires effort and resources from asset managers to tailor and adapt the data to their particular needs.
This session explores the minefield of data sourcing. How can data be better tailored to the requirements of asset managers, and how can its granularity, transparency and consistency be improved?

Adding a session to your personal schedule does not commit you to attend (except for the dinner or exclusive sessions where very clearly communicated). Conversely, it does not guarantee your seat, so come in good time where you suspect a full room.
